AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current

Eskom stays legal action to allow Nersa-led process on trading rules to unfold

Eskom has reached an agreement to suspend legal proceedings instituted against the granting of trading licences in 2024 to allow the current regulatory process to draft new trading rules to proceed in the absence of parallel litigation. In what was a surprise development at the time, Eskom applied to the High Court in July 2025 to have the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa’s) decision to grant five electricity trading licences reviewed and set aside.

Impact of lowering inflation target has ‘exceeded most optimistic expectations’

South African Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago says the spin-offs from the policy decision to lower the inflation target have “exceeded our most optimistic expectations”. On November 12, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the new inflation target for South Africa would be 3% with a one percentage point tolerance band. The previous target range of 3% to 6% had been in place for 25 years.

Following the February 18 judgment delivered in the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng South Division, in a case between Sibanye-Stillwater subsidiary Sibanye Gold and State-owned Eskom – which saw the overturning of Eskom’s refusal to grant a wayleave for a licence-exempt, behind-the-meter renewable-energy project – the Energy Council of South Africa stresses the importance of the ruling. The matter concerned Eskom’s refusal of Sibanye-Stillwater’s wayleave application to develop a 50 MW behind-the-meter PV power plant to supply electricity to Sibanye-Stillwater’s Kloof gold mine, in Gauteng.

Rail localisation study launched as public and private train operators gear up to meet 250Mt target

A study has been launched to assess South Africa’s existing railways manufacturing capacity and capability and to make recommendations on how policy and procurement can be leveraged to bolster localisation and transformation. The study has been commissioned by the Localisation Support Fund (LSF) and will be conducted by Letsema Consulting over the coming six months.
