Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

S&P upgrades Eskom’s credit ratings amid turnaround progress

State-owned utility Eskom has welcomed S&P Global Ratings’ decision to upgrade the company’s foreign and local currency long-term credit ratings from B to B+, with a stable outlook. The upgrade also applies to Eskom’s senior secured and unsecured debt, while government-guaranteed foreign currency debt was raised from BB- to BB+. Eskom’s national scale rating improved from zaBBB+/zaA-2 to zaAV/zaA-1.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) has again confirmed that it is continuing with its negotiations with the US in a bid to reduce the 30% reciprocal tariffs that have been imposed on many South African exports since August. In a presentation to the parliamentary portfolio committee, deputy director-general for trade Ambassador Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter indicated that the immediate focus was on reciprocal tariffs, with a view to then pursuing a second round of talks on country specific commitments, as well as on a specific tariff offer.

Zeda bets on Africa as it eyes expansion opportunities

Three years after listing on the JSE, integrated mobility group Zeda says it plans to scale up by expanding its reach into the rest of Africa. Announcing the company’s financial results for the financial year ended September 30 on Tuesday, CEO Ramasela Ganda said the Avis/Budget group had offered Zeda just under 20 licences to establish operations in countries in East, West and Central Africa.

Zero Carbon Charge (Charge) has broken ground on two off-grid, solar-powered ultrafast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the N3 corridor. The first, Charge N3 Roadside in the Free State, is about 180 km from Johannesburg, with Charge N3 Tugela in KwaZulu-Natal, roughly 200 km from Durban.

Uber launches electric offering in South Africa, showcases Moto product

Transport company Uber on November launched its Uber Go Electric offering for South Africa at an event in Johannesburg, and also used the occasion to highlight its recently-established Uber Moto offering. The two offerings are part of the company’s low-cost mobility journey, aimed at providing an Uber option for the about 40% of the people in the country that do not have access to reliable, safe and sustainable transport, Uber sub-Saharan Africa GM Deepesh Thomas explained to Engineering News at the launch.
