Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

Necsa outlines plans for rejuvenating South Africa’s nuclear sector

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), the State-owned company responsible for nuclear research and technology development, as well as the provision of nuclear applications and products, has six high impact programmes aimed at strengthening the country’s nuclear sector and the benefits it provides to the country. “The high impact programmes in our view are a fundamental shift in the Necsa growth strategy that we began implementing on 1 April 2026, focusing on increasing revenue for Necsa and supporting South Africa’s nuclear industry,” highlights Necsa Group CEO Loyiso Tyabashe. “We believe that we built the solid foundation on the back of our turnaround strategy from 2021, that has delivered positive results in financial sustainability, improved operations and governance as well as stability. It should be noted that the six programmes have multiple projects, which will be executed and come on stream over time and beyond the five-year term of the strategy.”

Business defends making Joburg partnership offer ahead of crucial elections

The business formations that have formally offered to extend the Government-Business Partnership model – hitherto used to tackle national crises such as loadshedding – to the City of Johannesburg have acknowledged the “sensitive” timing of the proposal in light of upcoming local government elections. Nevertheless, they argue that the scale of the crisis has meant that the decision, which was first mooted in September last year, could not be placed on hold pending the electoral cycle. In addition, they stress that the offer is “not partisan”, as it has been addressed to all political parties.

Industry body the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz) has elected PG Strauss chairperson and Lukeshni Chetty and Francois Swanepoel as his deputies during the organisation’s yearly congress on June 4. Strauss is also group CEO of agriculture solutions VKB Group and brings to Agbiz in-depth experience in agriculture and international trade.

Grinaker reports progress on construction of multi-storey parkade at Transnet headquarters

Construction company Grinaker Building & Construction says it is making progress in building the multi-level, heavy-duty structural concrete parkade at State-owned Transnet’s headquarters, in Johannesburg. The company is targeting the delivery of a fully operational parkade and a dedicated guardhouse facility to support secure access management by August 31.

The Square Kilometre Array Observatory now has 14 members

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Observatory (SKAO) has announced that France has become the international organisation’s fourteenth member. French President Emmanuel Macron signed the documents of accession in March, and the country’s membership has now come into effect. With the accession of France, the membership of the SKAO has increased by 100% since it came into being, in 2021. “After many years of contributing to the SKA project, it is a great pleasure to welcome France as a member of the Observatory,” highlighted SKAO Council chair Dr Filippo Zerbi. “As well as a national legacy of excellence in astronomy across centuries, French institutions’ expertise in supercomputing for big science makes France an invaluable partner as the SKAO progresses towards early science operations in the coming months.”
