Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

Umoyilanga hybrid power station targets full operations in 2026 as Dassiesridge is completed

The 75 MW Umoyilanga hybrid project, which combines solar, wind and battery storage technologies across two sites to produce dispatchable electricity, has taken a step closer to its full commercial operations date (COD) with construction completed at the Dassiesridge site in the Eastern Cape. The project, which was one of the winning bidders under South Africa’s troubled Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) that was overshadowed by the powership bids, is being developed by a consortium involving EDF power solutions and investment company Perpetua Holdings.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects global air passenger traffic to grow by 4.9% from five-billion passengers this year to 5.2-billion passengers in 2026. In Africa, the association expects passenger numbers to grow from 142-million this year to 149-million next year, marking 6% year-on-year growth, which is ahead of the industry average globally.

CSIR partners with life sciences specialist in US to advance contextualised medical research

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has signed a memorandum of understanding and a licensing agreement with a California-based data and life sciences platform, PromptBio, to help drive medical sovereignty on the African continent. The partnership will support integrated multiome data analysis and AI-powered insights as part of the Clinical Multiome Atlas Platform (Clin-MAP), which is housed at the CSIR.
