AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current

Ramokgopa promises ‘sequenced’ roadmap for wholesale electricity market roll-out

Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reports that his department will publish a “sequenced” implementation roadmap for the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM) so as to address prevailing uncertainty over the transition to a competitive market structure. In his Budget Vote address on Tuesday, the Minister said the SAWEM would introduce clearer price signals, improve dispatch efficiency, allocate balancing responsibilities, improve transparency and reduce long-term reliance on the single buyer model.

Economy still highly concentrated, but positive trends abound, report shows

South Africa’s economy remains highly concentrated, with about one-third to one-half of 228 economic subsectors still ranked as highly or moderately concentrated; however, there are positive trends of reducing concentration in most sectors of the economy. This is according to the Competition Commission of South Africa’s second ‘Economy Concentration Tracker’ report, which Competition Commissioner Doris Tshepe handed over to Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau in Pretoria on May 12.

Lesco doubles capacity as it rolls out semi-robotic production lines at its Joburg plant

Local manufacturer of electrical and consumer products Lesco has unveiled its new semi-robotic production lines at its Johannesburg plant. The third-generation South African manufacturer says the technological upgrade, combined with advanced use of AI on the factory floor, will aid in doubling Lesco’s total manufacturing capacity from five-million to ten-million units a year.

Toyota, government hand over locally developed hydrogen refuelling station

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM), together with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and Hydrogen South Africa (HySA), have handed over a locally developed mobile hydrogen refuelling station to the North-West University (NWU). HySA is a DSTI national programme, launched in 2008, to develop and guide research, development and innovation in hydrogen and fuel-cell technologies.

Sedfa, CIDB launch R300m Construction Fund

The Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (Sedfa) and construction industry regulator the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) have launched the R300-million Construction Fund – a government-led initiative aimed at strengthening support for small enterprises in the construction sector. This initiative is aimed at providing access to finance and developmental support to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) operating across various subsectors of the construction sector.
