Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

FlySafair, Solidarity reach agreement

After 12 days of lockout and strike action by FlySafair pilots, an agreement has been reached between the airline and trade union Solidarity, following mediation by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Solidarity deputy general secretary Helgard Cronjé says the CCMA-led proposal, accepted by both parties, was the closest middle ground that could be reached. “There are no winners in this process.”

Most South African small firms at risk of collapse, survey finds

More than half South Africa’s small businesses don’t expect to survive for more than a year, a survey backed by lender Absa Group found. Some 53% of the 1 600 entities canvassed for the inaugural Small Business Growth Index said they were contracting, trading with difficulty or at risk of closure, with costs of some of inputs such as transport and raw materials climbing as much as 61%.

Daimler Truck signs letter of intent on truck assembly plant in Senegal

Daimler Truck has signed a letter of intent on the establishment of a local truck assembly plant together with the government of the Republic of Senegal and private sector company Global Truck Systems (GTS). Daimler Truck will support its two partners in setting up the plant in Senegal, and will also supply vehicle component sets in completely knocked down (CKD) form to the operation.

New-vehicle sales notch up best month since October 2019, exports down 1.9%

July delivered the best monthly new-vehicle sales tally since October 2019, says naamsa | The Automotive Business Council. Last month’s new-vehicle sales, at 51 383 units, were up 15.6% compared with July last year, with the action on South Africa’s showroom floors driven by improved consumer confidence, favourable credit conditions and a steady recovery in disposable incomes, notes the auto sector body.

Manufacturing PMI returns to growth in July amid demand rebound, but jobs and outlook weaken

The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) edged above the 50-point mark and recorded an expansion for the first time in nine months, increasing by 2.3 points to 50.8 in July, driven by a relatively strong recovery in demand, Absa said on August 1. The last time the headline PMI was in expansionary territory was in October 2024 at 52.6 points.
