Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

VW's Plant Kariega builds 500 000th Polo

Automotive manufacturer Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) says its Plant Kariega, in the Eastern Cape, has built 500 000 units of the latest iteration of the popular VW Polo, since the introduction of the facelift of the car in 2021. Specifically, the 500 000th Polo, which is a Kings Red Polo in the new facelift model, is bound for the brand’s home country of Germany, and rolled off the production line in Kariega earlier in October.

Minister’s ‘State will lead, market will follow’ electricity assertion raises questions

Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s insistence that the State will lead and the market follow in the procurement of new electricity generation, while simultaneously indicating that any new investment will be “off balance sheet” for government and, thus, funded by the private sector, has raised questions. The Minister made the statement at a briefing held to release details of the updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2025), which he argued set the policy framework and that “everyone will procure according to this policy”. This, while also acknowledging that policy adjustments had been made that resulted in the plan deviating from a least-cost outcome.

Cape Town mulls rolling out congestion charging, high-occupancy vehicle lanes

The City of Cape Town (CoCT) is mulling a number of measures to ease growing congestion, including the introduction of high-occupancy lanes and congestion charging. This means that car users may, in future, pay to enter high-traffic areas during peak hours, and that selected lanes may be reserved for vehicles with more than a certain number of occupants, as well as for buses and minibus taxis.

Exports from South African SMEs to the US down 46% since April, index shows

The Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Export Index shows that exports by South African SMEs to the US have dropped by 46% since April, with small direct-to-consumer businesses hit hardest, says South African international shipping platform TUNL. The SME Export Index is based on real shipping volumes from a fixed cohort of 1 850 South African exporters and provides a monthly barometer of how tariffs are affecting small South African businesses that ship globally.

Adjudication board rules Stefanutti entitled to R685m additional payment for work at Kusile

The Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) has issued its decision with respect to a dispute between JSE-listed Stefanutti Stocks and State-owned utility Eskom over the Kusile power station, finding that Stefanutti is entitled to additional payment of R685-million, excluding value-added tax. Both parties have the right to refer the decision to arbitration, however, in terms of the contract, the decision is binding and must be given effect to, unless and until it is revised by amicable settlement or an arbitral award.
