Cape Town aiming to create its own solar-based electricity utility

The ambition of the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is to set up an electricity utility that will meet the demand from the city's changing customer base. This was pointed out by CoCT executive director: energy Kadri Nassiep. He was participating in a keynote session at the Solar & Storage 2026 Conference, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The city wants to achieve long-term market stability for its customers, which is not currently possible. The CoCT had in recent years moved into the development of solar energy (plus battery energy storage systems, or BESS) in order to mitigate the effects of loadshedding by national electricity utility Eskom. "That's what drove us," he explained.
