AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current

New online tool offers instant assessment of a project’s ‘just transition’ credentials

A new online portal has been launched to enable project originators and/or financiers to determine quickly whether the project being assessed aligns with the principles of South Africa’s just transition and could, thus, qualify for just-transition financing. Developed by Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS), the Just Transition Finance Tool is free to use and has been designed to provide a consistent, evidence-based way to assess a project’s just credentials using an algorithm that interrogates the project’s climate, socioeconomic and community objectives.

Engie welcomes back veteran energy expert as MD of renewables unit

Green energy company Engie South Africa has appointed Sanjeev Mungroo MD of its renewables and batteries business, effective January 1. Engie South Africa says in a statement issued on January 22 that Mungroo’s appointment marks a strategic step forward for the company’s growth in the country and a personal full-circle moment as Mungroo was the company’s third employee when it first established operations in the country.

JSE-listed ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has confirmed that it is engaged in advanced discussions with Luxemburg-based steel giant and parent company the ArcelorMittal Group, as well as South African development finance organisation the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to find a sustainable solution based on a nonbinding term sheet regarding a potential transaction. These discussions remain subject to definitive agreements, it states in a January 22 note to shareholders.

Sasol reports Louisiana cracker plant restart, beneficial operation at South African destoning plant

JSE-listed energy and chemicals company Sasol, reporting on its performance for the six months to December 31, 2025, says its Southern Africa destoning plant reached beneficial operation in December, while its integrated polyethylene cracker plant in Louisiana, in the US, was also restarted following an extended outage. During the period under review, Sasol remained focused on stable and reliable operational performance, while reinforcing the importance of safety in all aspects of operations.

Private sector council to support govt’s FMD strategy implementation

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has appointed an Industry Coordination Council to support implementation of the country’s national long-term Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) strategy. The council has been established to ensure industry plays an active, coordinated role in supporting the phased rollout of the FMD strategy, including vaccine distribution, traceability and disease control readiness.
