South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana ruled out any major tax changes in next month’s budget and stressed the importance of keeping fiscal consolidation on track. “It’s not something we intend; making substantial” tax changes in the budget, Godongwana told Bloomberg Television in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Friday.

The South African Poultry Association (SAPA) has, once again, called on the National Treasury to remove the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on specific chicken products, ahead of the 2026 National Budget, which is set to be presented on February 25. SAPA has long advocated that chicken be added to South Africa’s list of zero-rated basic foodstuffs, joining the likes of maize meal, rice, milk, eggs, tinned pilchards and brown bread.

Grain producers experiencing financial strain amid low prices, high costs

Industry body Grain SA has warned that South Africa’s sharply lower maize prices may bring relief to consumers but are placing severe financial pressure on local grain producers. Without adequate buffers, prolonged low returns risk undermining production capacity, skills retention and future food security, the organisation says, referring to the most prominent risks as being logistics efficiency, predictable trade administration, access to affordable inputs and stable, evidence-based policy.

After nearly a year of rumours about its possible closure, the axe has finally fallen on Nissan’s assembly operations in Rosslyn, Pretoria. The Japanese group announced last year that it would close seven plants out of a global network of 17 manufacturing sites as the struggling carmaker reported a net loss of $4.5-billion for the year that ended in March, amid surging restructuring costs and the fallout of President Donald Trump’s trade war.

South Africa’s SALT telescope plays key role in solving a cosmic mystery

SuperUser Account 0 0 Article rating: No rating
The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) has been used, by international astronomers, to solve a “cosmic mystery”. Located in the South African Astronomical Observatory complex at Sutherland in the Karoo, in the Northern Cape province, SALT was used to observe one of the most extreme stars ever found, designated WOH G64, which lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC – a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way). WOH G64 is one of the coolest but also most luminous, as well as dustiest, red supergiant stars in the LMC. This kind of star ends its days in a core-collapse supernova explosion. And, over the past ten years WOH G64 has faded to a significant degree, while its pulsations have been suppressed, and the spectrum of the light that it emits has become dominated by emission lines from ionised gas, rather than those typical of red supergiants. Moreover, in 2024, it was discovered that the star was being veiled by a fresh dust cloud.
