Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

UCT celebrates tenth birthday of institute focused on processing astronomical data

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has highlighted the tenth anniversary of the country’s Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA). This was a joint endeavour between UCT, the University of the Western Cape and the University of Pretoria and was hosted by UCT. The IDIA was created to meet the problem of processing, analysing, interpreting and visualising the huge amounts of data that would be produced by the next generation of radio telescope arrays. South Africa’s own world-leading MeerKAT, which became fully operational in 2018, was the most notable of these. And now the South Africa-based mid-radio frequency array of the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope would soon also start operations.

R650m GrandWest Mall development breaks ground in Cape Town

Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a subsidiary of Sun International, has marked the official start of construction on the R650-million GrandWest Mall development within the GrandWest entertainment precinct in Cape Town. The sod-turning ceremony marked the formal start of construction on the 22 000 m² convenience mall, with completion and opening scheduled for June next year.

Exxaro displays major wind, solar achievement without shrinking coal

Impressive renewable-energy advances were graphically displayed by coal major Exxaro during its Capital Day on Monday, June 22. The first was a wind turbine involving 600 m3 of concrete in a 25 m excavation, elevated by a 15 t steel centre on a 60 t steel base, and the second a huge solar plant supplying green electrons. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.)

Nersa issues call for CEO nominations
