Renewable energy engineering firm AfiCoast Engineers SA has announced that a new company,
AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

64 companies to pledge to procure from black industrialists, says Patel

During the second Black Industrialists and Exporters Conference to be held later this week, up to 64 large companies are expected to make pledges to procure goods and services from black industrialists over the next five years. This year’s conference, to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, is being hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Export Credit Insurance Corporation, the National Empowerment Fund and the Industrial Development Corporation.

SAWEA wants IRP overhaul as it questions massively diminished role for wind in current draft

The South African Wind Energy Association’s (SAWEA’s) formal response to the draft Integrated Resource Plan 2023 (IRP 2023) questions both the modelling and assumptions used to determine the vastly diminished allocation for wind energy in the period to 2030 when compared with the prevailing plan. It will also call for an overhaul of the document, including its post-2030 Horizon Two, given the lack of transparency in the current version regarding the modelling constraints employed, as well as the embedded policy adjustments and their associated costs.

Thirty-one countries to start trading under AfCFTA Agreement this year

Amid the increasing importance of intra-African trade, 31 countries are expected to start trading under the African Continental FreeTrade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement by the end of the year, South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition Trade Branch Africa bilateral economic relations chief director John Rocha said during a March 14 Transport Forum webinar. To this end, 54 out of 55 African Union member States have signed the AfCFTA, while 43 have deposited their instruments of ratification.

US Treasury’s Adeyemo says he’s more bullish on South Africa

Cooperation between the government and business is boosting South Africa’s prospects, despite the myriad challenges the economy faces, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said. Adeyemo, who spent five days in South Africa meeting government and business officials, noted that the nation’s economy is growing despite obstacles including an electricity shortage and dysfunctional ports and freight-rail lines. That, he said, is partly due to companies collaborating with the State to fix the problems.
